Show & Tell Saturday

A while back I mentioned that I wanted to start a weekly post about the other things our friends out there find while garage saleing and thrifting. Originally I wanted to call it Watchafind Wednesday BUT I decided that I actually want to show case what you found on Saturday. I hate that I get out garage saleing Saturday morning and don't get my post up about my finds till later in the week so instead of Watchafind Wednesday we are going to do a Show & Tell Saturday! It doesn't really matter what you post about as long as it was bought at a garage sale or thrift store. You can post about one particular project or you can post about your garage sale day and the things you found. We just want to see your amazing finds! So please if you would like to participate in my Show and Tell Saturdays email me so I can get you scheduled!

Now for our FIRST Show and Tell Saturday, who better than the lovely lady who inspired this idea in the first place, Janiene Bishop!

Hi! I'm Janiene from A Bunch of Bishops and I'm back
to share my cabinet make-over with ya'll.
I'm the Mom that took her 3 kiddos garage saleing and shared my adventures with you all a couple weeks ago. Click here to read about that fun day and see what I scored!!

So, without further ado, here we go!!

Here is the cabinet I bought for $1...

Gross huh?!
Well all I could envision was a chalkboard writing desk for my 3yr old son!
I almost broke my back loading it into the car (that thing is SOLID WOOD!!!).

I brought it home and started working on it.
I sanded the top to remove the patchy lacquer (I used course sandpaper because I did not want the surface to be super smooth since we were chalkboard painting it)...

I removed all the hardware (I am kinda in love with the lion hardware, so cute) and then I removed that weird decorative railing...

I covered and taped off the whole bottom of the cabinet so that only the top would be chalkboard painted. My husband is awesome at spray painting so he helped me paint it...

Then, I ran to the store for a couple hours and when I got home my husband had finished painting the base and he had replaced the hardware! He did not take pictures of the process of painting the base, boo!

We used Krylon Gloss Global Blue spray paint
for the bottom of the cabinet
Krylon Chalkboard spray paint
on the desk top.

The chalkboard writing table,

I really loved that the desk had holes all along the top of the desk. Why you ask? Well, if you have ever given a hand full of colored pencils or markers to a kid, the first thing they do is line them up on the desk in color order. And then the markers and colored pencils roll all over the place and fall on the ground. I wanted to keep the holes on the desk surface so that my kids could stand up their markers and colored pencils...

When the doors of the cabinet are open, my son can scoot a chair right up and rest his feet inside the cabinet. Plus the cabinet is HUGE and we can use it to store his art supplies...

Ahhhh, I am loving this Chalkboard Writing Desk!!!!
Total cost was $13: $1 desk + $12 in spray paint

Thank you Robin for letting me share my Chalkboard Writing Desk make over with your great followers!!! I have been so inspired by your blog Robin! Thanks for everything :)

Blessings to you all!

Janiene, seriously $1 for that cabinet! Great find. I love the way you redid it! It's so cute and fun for kids at the same time. Great job!

June 16th 2012

C.J. had yet another triathlon this week so yes my garage sale day was short. It always seems like something comes up on Saturday but don't let that stop you! Even getting out to one or two garage sales can be beneficial and can help you save money. Here is what I bought this week.

I bought 3 purses this week. The silver one on the left was .50 cents! The other two i paid $3 dollars a piece for.
I bought another pair of sunglasses for $1 and these necklaces for .50 cents a piece!
The sunglasses had never been worn and still had the tags on them for $36.00 dollars from Kohls!
I bought C.J. these rags for car cleaning for .50 cents a piece.
I bought another boppy type of pillow. This one was called a Nursing Nest. It's still in the packaging. I paid $1 dollar for it and gave it to a friend that is due in about a week. The packaging even had a pattern on the back of it so that you could make your own boppy cover! After giving it away my friend text me the next day and said she made a cover for it! She is going to send me over pictures of her process so I will be posting about it!
Here is another essential to a pregnancy. I loved having this book while I was pregnant and being able to read up on what my baby was doing while in my belly. If they are in good condition these make great baby gifts to anyone! I paid $1 dollar for this one! I found the same one of for $9

I also bought a bunch of clothes this week. I bought
1 floral skirt- $1.50
2 lacey shirts-$3
1 lace tank-$1
1 gold shirt-$2
1 pair of nylon leggings for Jaysa-.50 cents
1 yellow and white scarf -.50 cents
and 1 brown Crocodile Dundee shirt-$2
I also bought this pair of orange shoes for $1.

I bought this platter for $2 dollars. I can't wait to get it up somewhere I think is it so pretty.

This patio set sold for $60 dollars!! Wish I would have gotten there a little earlier!
This wedding dress pedi coat was only $15!

These cool old door knobs were $5 dollars a piece.
Here is a pillow pet for $4. Paisley has this exact one and LOVES, LOVES, LOVES it! If it had been one she didn't already have I would have bought it.
I also found a garage sale that had lots of name brand jeans and sweats. She had True religion, Ed Hardy, Antique Denim, Juicy Couture and a few others. She wanted $25 dollars for the jeans and pants. The jeans are upwards of $100 dollars often times much more so $25 was a great deal. I didn't buy any though. Jenas are the last thing that I need.
I wanted this little jewelry box SO BAD! When I asked the lady how much she wanted for it I could tell it had sentimental value to her, which raises the price in her mind. Not in mine though. She wanted $10 dollars for it. It is beautiful but I am sorry I don't pay for someone else's sentimental value. If you're still attached to an item don't sell it!
This huge 8 man tent sold for $75
This cute little bed sold for $25. It had the posts at the end but the buyer had already taken them home.
Carpet for sale! Yes, you can find almost anything at garage sales! Carpet is SO expensive! The seller wanted $150 for this roll but it didn't look like anyone was too interested so I am sure he would have gone down.
When we moved in to this house I wanted the carpet in my front room replaced because the previous owners had a dog and the carpet reeked of pet oder. C.J. couldn't smell it but the odor was so strong to me that I wouldn't even walk in the room. After looking at Lowes and Homedepot at carpet prices I thought I would never be able to sit in my front room but then I started looking on craigslist. I found a similar carpet to my own that was in great shape and was a much better quality than what I had. I bought the roll for $150 and had it replaced. Now I love my living room!

Fill a bag! These are the best deals! I love it when the seller lets you fill a bag for a certain price. Let me tell you I think about anyone that might need some clothes and I stuff that thing as full as I can get it!!!! You can get clothes for pennies with this sort of deal!
This large mirror sold for $25
These nike shoes were $5 dollars a piece and were in good shape.
This changing table was only $5 dollars!!!!!!!!! It even has a little drawer for your diapers and everything! It was already sold though. :(

Seriously people! Get out there and see what you can find! Don't forget to come back and show us your deals! I want to start a show and tell so email me pictures of all your amazing finds @

Fashion on a Dime

In my dreams I would be able to do a Fashion on a Dime once a week. Here's to being optimistic in meeting that goal! In case you missed it over at Covered in Grace.
My financial stats for this outfit are:
Yellow jean capris- $6.00 at Goodwill
Shirt- $5.99 at D.I.
Cream shoes- $3 dollars at a garage sale.
My total outfit cost is $15 dollars. My DPWF is $1.50!

Dressing yourself and your family does not have to be expensive! If you are patient and smart you can get cute and in style clothing at garage sales and second hand stores for next to nothing! I hope I can inspire you to get out there and do a little thrift shopping and garage saleing to see what you can find!

Covered in Grace

It's time for another Monday Meet Up!
Hello new friends!! I'm so happy to be blog swapping with Robin today and to get the opportunity to meet you all.
My name is Brooke, and I blog over at Covered in Grace. There, I write about life as a mother, student, military wife, photog wannabe, writer and Jesus lover. You can find Robin over at my blog today; be sure to head on over and check out her post!

Covered in Grace

For those of you that don't know me yet, I thought I'd answer a few questions about myself so yall could get to know me a little better.

1. How did you come up with the title of your blog?
Covered in Grace was something that had been rolling around in my head for a while. I had been blogging at My Beautiful Brooke for a long time, and while I was ok with the title, "beautiful" because HE sees me, it still wasn't sitting well with me-not completely. Covered in Grace encompasses what I believe, how I live, and pretty sums it all up. I am Covered in Grace through faith in Jesus.

2. If there was one blog post that you'd direct your readers to, what would that be?
Oh man, I'd direct you to any of my faith posts, but right now, the one that I love so much, that really tugs on my heartstrings right now is "...all summer long."  You can also see a branch off of that post at From the Guest Room.

3. What is your go-to quick fix meal when you've spent too much time on Pinterest/Your Blog been very, very busy?
Ha! Pancakes? Biscuits with eggs? Anything breakfast!

4. What is something you're looking forward to this coming summer?
I'm finally going back home to Texas for a visit!! I have been stuck on this rock in the Pacific for two and a half years (without leaving) and I am sooo excited to finally head out for a little bit. My little brother is getting married! And I'll finally get to see my niece! Woo!

5. Do you have any goofy talents or specialties?
Why, yes. Yes I do. I can make a siren sound by throat-chopping myself. It's very, very awesome. I think I'll do a vlog to demonstrate. Stay tuned!

6. If you could be a character from any book through out the entire story, what book-what character?
Oh, that's easy. No question. I would be Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser...wife of Jamie Fraser. (oooh la la) She's the heroine in the best books ever....the Outlander series. If you haven't read these books, YOU MUST! These are the books I recommend over all others.

7. What is the best piece of blogging advice that you've ever received?
Be yourself. Write about what you want, feel, believe. And don't worry about the numbers.

8. What is your biggest dream?
To grow old with my husband. But after's to become a published just be a writer and have my words reach the masses.

9. What is your favorite Saturday morning like?
Waking up whenever, breakfast with the family, heading outside to be in this gorgeous Hawaiian weather...

10. Why do you blog?
I blog to practice my craft. To use my gifts. To reflect on my spirituality and faith. I blog to glorify God. To share my favorite things. To network with others. To maintain daily writing habits. I blog because it has become a fantastic hobby...and because I love it.

I would love it if you'd stop by and visit me from time to time!
