DIY Towel Rack

I saw this on Pinterest which inspired me to create something of my own that was very similar.
I had this old door I bought from a guy I met at a garage sale. I paid $12 dollars for it. If you don't have anything like this it would be very easy to go buy the wood from your local home improvement store.
I had it in my girls bathroom and was using it as a towel rack. The hooks used to hold the towels I bought at a garage sale. 3 hooks for $5.
I loved the tree in the original project from Pinterest so I decided to stick with that idea just on a much larger scale. I went and bought a poster board at Walmart and channeled the inner 7th grader in me who used to like to draw. I then cut out my tree and used double sided tape to tape it to my door.
If I could do it all over again I would not have used a poster board. I would have tried wax paper or something that wouldn't have absorbed my paint but would have sat more flush against my project. I will show you why in a minute.
To keep cost down I also just bought a paint sample instead of buying a whole quart of paint. As long as you are not painting large pieces of furniture you would be surprised how far these paint samples will go. I didn't even use it all. These are only $3 at Lowes or Home Depot
I also used a foam roller to roll my paint on. I swear these were sent down from heaven above just for me because I HATE brush strokes with a passion. These don't leave any pattern in your paint!
Here is my door after I started painting.

After I was done and my paint had dried I pealed off my poster board. Here is what it looked like. Not too bad right? Not till you get close at least.
Using poster board was NOT a good idea
When I peeled off the poster board it took off more than I wanted in some spots and in other spots didn't protect the design of my tree.
So I had to go back with a small paint brush and touch up everything.
After I fixed the outline of my tree I took some sand paper and sanded the edges of my project down
I also used a sander on the corners to really rough them up. My sander is also from a garage sale and came in a bag with little sanding sheets. I paid $5 for it!
Here is my corner after using the sander.
I wasn't a huge fan of the color of the wood underneath the paint so I took some stain and stained everywhere that the wood showed through. When you are working with stain get a rag and dip it in your stain and then rub it into your project until it is all soaked in. Easy as that.
Here is how the stain made my wood look. Much better!
You can use stain to distress your project but it is much less forgiving than glaze. I used a little bit of both.

When I used stain on this project instead of just painting it on I dipped my brush in the paint
and then dabbed it on a rag
I do this when I don't want the entire project glazed. It allows you to concentrate your glaze in certain locations.

Here it is after being glazed!
And finally on my wall! I have more plans for this wall in the future and can't wait to see how everything turns out. Here is my before once again.
Here is a close up of the old hooks I used to hang towels on

Buyer's Rejoice

There is an emotional reaction I get sometimes when I find an AMAZING deal. I am trying to think of how to explain it to you so you can understand what it’s like. Does this help?
ha ha ha no seriously though, to be honest it is the complete opposite of buyer's remorse, which is why I call it buyer's rejoice. It is pretty much an adrenaline rush from finding something amazing. It is the feeling of walking up to a garage sale and spotting something that you have been looking for for a long time or that you could only dream about being able to afford. Then asking how much the seller wants for the item and having it be such a crazy deal that you can't even wrap you head around the fact that they would sell it for so cheap. It is the feeling that after you hand the seller the money that you need to turn around and dart to your car, start the engine and speed off as fast as you can before they realize what they did. And finally the feeling of safety when you are far enough away that the seller couldn't even jump in their car and flag you down if they wanted. You then take your hands off the steering wheel for a brief moment and see that your hands are uncontrollably shaking and your legs feel like jello. This is a Buyer's rejoice high. Now don't laugh, I know it sounds crazy, but you will know it when you feel it and when you do think of me and how you didn't think it was possible! Enjoy that moment and the amazing deal you just found! You deserve it!

We got some cool finds this week that I am so excited to show you!
How fun are these boots?!?! I bought them from a Hispanic women who's sister bought them in Mexico. They are a really nice soft leather. She only wanted $2 for them!

I also bought 3 pair of high heels from a women at the next garage sale. I have been to this women's garage sale before and she is always getting rid of shoes that have barley been worn. She keeps all her shoes in the boxes for storage and they are always in mint condition.
I paid $5 a piece for each pair.
This pair still had the price tags on the bottom of them. Shows you how much they were worn! These black strapy Steve Maddens were bought in the store for $24. I saved $19! Here they are on.
This next pair are a Dana Buchman and are my favorite.
These shoes were bought at Kohls for $70! I saved $65!
Here is the last pair. These are Naughty Monkey's. Naughty Monkey brand has always been one of my favorite brands of shoes but they are SOOOO pricey!
I didn't find these exact shoes but check out prices of Naughty Monkey shoes HERE at zappos.com. I think there were a total of three shoes that were under $50 dollars. The rest are upwards of $70-$80 even for the flip flops!

Along with my three pair of brand name shoes for $15, I convinced the lady to thrown in this cute bracelet for free!
Here is is with some other bracelets I have found at garage sales

DEAL OF THE DAY
Here is my deal of the day and let me tell you how excited I am to have found this. C.J. and I are slowly working on updating all of our bathrooms. My hope is that I will be able to find bathroom vanities, mirrors, and lighting all at garage sales.
When I walked up to this garage sale, which by the way was in a trailor park, I saw this. My husband asked how much they wanted for the mirror and the lady said it was sold. Curious I asked how much it sold for. She said $20!!!!!!! I almost fainted right there. This is almost a 6 foot long ANTIQUE mirror! It is worth hundreds! The lady explained that it had sold in a Friday garage sale but the person had not come to pick it up. Devastated, but with a little tiny ray of hope I left my number for the lady to call me if the women never came to pick it up. At the end of my garage sale day I went back to check on it. As I got closer to the garage sale I was trying to prepare myself for the disapointment that it had most likely been picked up but when I pulled up it was still there! I seriously think my heart skipped a few beats. I got out and was talking with the lady holding the garage sale. She expressed to me that she was worried that the lady was not going to come and pick the mirror up and she didn't want to have to store it in her house any longer. To my surprise she told me that if I would give her $40 I could load it up and take it home! She made an extra $20 on me but I didn't care. It was still an amazing deal. I couldn't believe it! Total buyer's rejoice high. CLICK HERE to find out what a buyer's rejoice high is! I ran back to my car grabbed some money and they helped me load it up.
Here is a close up of the detailing. It will look perfect in my bathroom. The space I have for a mirror was 5 ft 9.5 inches and this mirror is 5 ft 9 inches long! We are working on getting it up on the wall now! Can't wait to show you pictures!
